Daikoku Parking Area is one of Japan's best-known meeting points for car enthusiasts—and one of the easiest Tokyo experiences to misunderstand. Here is what first-time visitors should know before setting out.
What is Daikoku PA?
Daikoku Parking Area is a highway rest stop in Yokohama where drivers sometimes gather in everything from carefully restored classics to modern supercars. It became internationally known through enthusiast videos and social media, but it is still a working rest area—not an attraction with a published show schedule.
Can tourists get there by train or on foot?
No practical pedestrian or public-transport entrance serves the parking area. It sits inside the Metropolitan Expressway system, so visitors arrive in a road-legal vehicle and must remain on a valid expressway route. A taxi may reach it, but finding a return ride can be difficult and drivers are not guaranteed to wait.
When is the car meet?
There is no official event calendar. Friday and Saturday evenings are widely associated with more activity, but the number and type of cars changes every night. Weather, traffic, police activity, holidays and private gatherings all affect what you may see. Treat any exact schedule promised online with caution.
Can Daikoku PA close?
Yes. Access can be restricted or the parking area can be cleared with little notice when it becomes crowded or unsafe. A responsible plan always includes another route or stop. Tokyo's expressways, Rainbow Bridge and Umihotaru can still make the evening worthwhile when Daikoku is unavailable.
Etiquette for visitors
Keep traffic lanes and shop entrances clear, stay aware of moving vehicles and ask before taking close-up photos of people. Do not touch cars, climb barriers or pressure drivers to rev. Take rubbish with you and follow staff or police instructions immediately. The gathering exists because owners choose to spend their evening there, so observe it as a guest.
The simplest way to visit
If you do not already have a suitable car and a driver who understands the expressway, a local passenger-seat experience removes the difficult parts: route planning, toll roads, language and the return journey. Tokyo Car Society's routes may include Daikoku PA or Umihotaru depending on access and conditions that night.
